One of the key properties of abrasives is their hardness; they must be harder than the material being machined. The hardness of various abrasives is commonly measured using the Mohs scale. Another important characteristic is toughness, which can be tailored by adjusting factors such as the blend ratio of raw materials, purity, particle size, and crystal structure, thereby optimizing performance for specific applications. In the manufacture of abrasive products, most raw materials are crushed and screened, with screening sizes ranging from 4 to 900 mesh—corresponding to particle diameters of approximately 6 mm down to 6 μm or even finer. Grinding wheels are the principal type of abrasive product; they are produced by blending abrasive grains with a binder in a specified proportion, forming the mixture into a compact under pressure, and then sintering it. Subsequent steps include shaping, balancing, and high-speed testing.
The advent of CBN abrasives has revolutionized grinding technology. Produced under conditions of high temperature and ultra‑high pressure through the transformation of hexagonal boron nitride, CBN can withstand temperatures of 1300°C to 1400°C, exhibits excellent chemical inertness toward ferrous elements, and boasts superior thermal conductivity. When grinding steel, it delivers a high material removal rate, a favorable grinding ratio, and extended tool life, making it an ideal abrasive for machining hard, tough materials such as quenched steels, high-speed steels, high‑strength steels, stainless steels, and heat‑resistant alloys.
Abrasives are widely used in industry, particularly when machining parts requiring high precision or low surface roughness, as well as exceptionally hard materials; in such cases, abrasives and abrasive tools are indispensable. In the automotive manufacturing sector, tight fits between piston rings and cylinders, between valves and valve seats, and the dimensional accuracy of transmissions and gears all depend on abrasive‑based machining processes to ensure quality.
